The Tingens

Livin’ in a pretty shady place

Literally. There are trees everywhere! It’s quite the contrast to Utah, and we love it (of course we love Utah too). If you can’t already tell, we’re in Richmond now, but actually we’re not–the area we live in just decided to secede from the city, so now we’re officially in Henrico. (That’s hen-RAI-ko.)

Everything’s pretty normal around here–they got banks, stores, hospitals, and plenty of people. The only weird thing is the street names. Here are some that make me chuckle every time we go by:

  • Three Chopt (we live on that one)unexpectedroad
  • Nine Mile Road (is it really nine miles long?)
  • Hull Street Road (what’s a street road? Or is it a street going one way and a road going the opposite way?)
  • Staples Mill
  • Quioccasin
  • Horsepen
  • Pinyon
  • Boulevard (that’s the street name; who knows if it’s Boulevard St, Boulevard Ln, Boulevard Dr, Boulevard Blvd…)
  • Skipwith
  • Dinwiddie

I can’t decide which of the last two is my favorite.

I don’t really spend most of my time thinking of street names, though. Aside from the first week when we were setting up things in the apartment (a really nice place), I’ve been spending all my days looking for jobs. It’s tough. I feel like I should have gotten a second major or specialized in something for an additional minor, because there aren’t many flat-out Spanish translation jobs out there. It looks like I got pretty lucky with BYUTVI last year; if only they had something similar out here. Everyone I talk to says, Oh,  you speak Spanish? You shouldn’t have any trouble getting a job. But it’s only been three weeks, after all. Overall we’re having a fantastic time here in Virginia. Heavenly Father definitely led us here.

Speaking of which, given how directed we felt for ending up in this particular apartment in this particular ward, with all its young married students and potential compadres, we’ve actually been asked NOT to attend this ward…

Meaning that the stake invited/asked us to start attending the inner city Richmond branch along with another couple from the ward.

What are the odds? The Lord directs us somewhere so we can go somewhere else. But we’re really excited about it, especially because there’s four missionaries in the ward and we’re excited to see how they’ll need us over there. 🙂

  1. Love the street names. At least they’re pronounceable in English. We’re moving to Calle Franja Verde in a couple of months. I think my favorite is the Unexpected RD. So, did you end up somewhere unexpected when you went down it? 🙂 Good luck finding a job. It’s gotta be tough. Maybe you could get a teaching license. My mom did that because straight up Spanish didn’t really go anywhere for her either. I’m jealous of the branch. Wish we could live in a branch…

  2. Haha Unexpected Rd actually isn’t in Richmond, but this is one of the few pictures I found online. As far as the job search goes, it’s just going. I’ve considered the teaching license thing too…

  3. Great to get an update from you. It does look shady there! Good luck with the job hunting–I’m not having much luck either, but hey, we were cultured people in college, right? 🙂
