The Tingens

The Tingen Family Crest

As we gear up to go to Spain, we’ve been talking to our children about why we’re going on this completely optional and potentially life-changing adventure. We’ve talked with them about what our family identity is, who we want to be, what we want our children to get out of this trip to Spain, and a lot of other topics.

As part of those conversations, we decided to create a couple of things–a family motto, a family mission statement, and a family crest.

With some brainstorming (and a little help from ChatGPT because we were originally going to do it in Latin), we finally came up with a family motto. No, not the motto our children had in mind (Icecream! [et glacie crematae!]). But this simple set of phrases:

Courage to grow.

Love to serve.

Joy to live.

Next, we turned to a family crest. I’ve done a number of work and other projects through Fiverr, so we found a designer for this quick project there. I was hoping for something a lot more minimal and modern than where we landed, and I don’t think we ever got to a point where every family member was completely satisfied, but sometimes relationships (like family crests?) are about compromise. And so here we landed. (We also ran out of revisions with the pro I hired on Fiverr):

We have a lot going on lately with moving and waiting on visas and trying to decide whether to go on an epic road trip while we wait for visas versus staying within one-day’s drive in case we have to come back to the Spain embassy in DC for whatever reason to keep our visa processing running smoothly.

(And what a run-on sentence!)

But we’re excited to post a few more pictures and share our adventure to Spain as soon as we get there.
